How to create a bluebird habitat

Six steps that decide whether a nest box hosts a brood or sits empty — the same details we build into every product we sell.

01

Choose the right birdhouse

Look for a 1½-inch entrance hole, a 5.5 × 5.5-inch floor, and 10 to 12 inches of cavity depth. Ventilation slots, drain holes, and a side clean-out panel matter as much as the wood species. Rough-sawn interiors help fledglings grip when it is time to climb out.

02

Place it in the right location

Bluebirds hunt insects from low perches over open ground. Aim for an open field, pasture, park edge, or generous suburban lawn with short grass. Face the entrance away from prevailing wind, ideally toward a nearby tree or fence line the fledglings can flutter to.

03

Mount it at the right height

Mount the box 5 to 6 feet off the ground on a smooth metal pole. Wood posts and trees make it easy for climbing predators. Space multiple boxes at least 100 yards apart to reduce territorial competition, or pair them 5 to 15 feet apart to accommodate tree swallows.

04

Add predator protection

A stovepipe or cone baffle on the pole plus a metal entrance-hole guard roughly doubles fledgling survival. Snakes, raccoons, and house cats are the biggest threats. If sparrows are aggressive in your area, a sparrow-resistant slot or in-box trap can help.

05

Keep it clean

Open the side panel weekly during nesting season to check for infestations, sparrow intrusion, or dead nestlings. Remove the used nest after each brood so bluebirds will re-nest, and do a full clean-out at the end of the season using a stiff brush.

06

Watch without disturbing

Bluebirds tolerate brief, calm nest checks and quickly return to the box. Avoid checks in bad weather, at dusk, or once nestlings are 12+ days old — that is when they risk fledging prematurely. Record your observations to track occupancy year over year.
